Mesothelioma is a rare form of tumor with only one established cause in humans - exposure to asbestos. This disease does not typically manifest itself until years after initial exposure to asbestos. And more insidiously, it can even be caused by a very short exposure. Several days working in asbestos dust, years ago, is enough to produce the tumor today, as the victim approaches retirement. The disease presents as a tumor in the lining of the lung (pleural mesothelioma), or the lining of the belly (peritoneal mesothelioma). Although radiation and oncology treatments may be beneficial in retarding the progression of the disease, they will not provide a cure. At this time the disease is invariably terminal. Because the disease may mimic the appearance of other tumors, it is sometimes difficult to definitively confirm the diagnosis of Mesothelioma without a biopsy or autopsy. Families who intend to pursue litigation on behalf of a loved one suffering from this condition should consider the advisability of autopsy for this reason.
